Kalani Interviews Scott Vogel from Terror

  • Kalani Pickhart from Mantooth Group did an interview with Terror this month in anticipation for the band's tour through The Nile Theater in Mesa, AZ with H20 and CodeOrangeKids on Tuesday, February, 12th, 2013.
  • Check out the interview below! To purchase tickets to the show: http://www.ticketfly.com/event/201183
  • Kalani: You have a new album, “Live by the Code,” that’s expected to release this April from Victory Records. Will we hear any new music on this tour?
  • Scott: Yep. We’re playing two new songs every night and have the Hard Lessons EP with us.
  • Kalani: What sorts of changes have you noticed in the hardcore scene/community as it has evolved over the years? Do you feel these changes are mostly good or bad (or neither)?
  • Scott: I see the same problems that have always been there. Egos. Competition. Tough guy nonsense. All that shit. But now in the computer age it’s easy to hide and be fake and talk shit without being seen or having to take responsibility. I see a lack of lyrics and truth. I see bands getting booking agents that don't need one. What they need is to grind hard themselves and learn the ropes of touring. On the flip side, I see a lot of positive stuff in the underworld. I see a lot of heart and scenes that have made a real home for HC in their cities.
  • Kalani: There are so many genres of music out there today for young people to identify with. Why has hardcore resonated with you, personally? Do you think hardcore music offers something different to the scene rather than other music genres might?
  • Scott: When I was first introduced to punk, I liked the energy, but anarchy and looking like a wacko didn't really appeal to me. Hardcore to me is the truth. The lyrics that raised me, shaped my mind and helped me see that this world is only as bad as you let it be. And the energy is unmatched. I love hip hop. Cold Play. Hot Water Music. But hardcore will always be my truth.
  • Kalani: What is your favorite part of touring? Are there any venues or cities that you look forward to visiting?
  • Scott: We have been lucky to see the world through our music. It’s amazing. Hanging with friends. Late drives and deep talks. Drunk days haa haa filled with craziness. Great shows and people that believe in us. We’re blessed big time and we have never forgotten that.
  • Kalani: What is one of your best show/concert memories? (Not as a performer).
  • Scott: Meeting Guru and Premier. The first time I saw Biohazard was unreal. Seeing Freddy Madball fresh out of jail, getting up on stage at an a show and telling the world Madball is back. Black Thought of The Roots ripping a mic. Doing a song with The Business. I could go on and on.
  • Kalani: What is one of your favorite Terror tour/show memories?
  • Scott: We played with Full Force in Europe on the main stage to 30,000 people and the next day in Germany to about 80 kids, no stage. I'm proud to be in this band with these guys. We never lost our heads or let the highs or lows change us.
  • Kalani: Describe “Live by the Code” OR Terror using the five senses: taste, touch, smell, sight, and sound.
  • Scott: Ok. I tried to think of a clever answer to this but I can't come up with shit. Sorry. I guess that answer in itself describes Live By The Code and Terror as a whole – no bullshit hardcore.
  • Kalani: What sorts of exciting things are you personally and/or Terror looking forward to in 2013?
  • Scott: Turning 40. I'm going to be 40 fucking years old. Shoot me in the head already. Fuck.
  • Kalani: Michelle wants to know: Why do you hate the Nile Main Room so much?
  • Scott: Look at that room. Massive. The stage is so high. And huge. Terror likes that in your face style. Kids on top of kids. Not like at me on this big stage ‘Oh - aren't I a rocker. Aren't I cool.’ Blahhhhhhh. Air conditioning downstairs would be nice though!
  • Kalani: Mantooth wants to know: Any awesome stagediving stories?
  • Scott: What's a stagedive?
